Illinois Sports Betting Handle Reaches $114 Million

The Illinois sports betting handle continues to improve month after month. We are now seeing a more stable calendar of sports events. In addition, the temporary suspension of in-person registration holds up to October 17. These are what analysts perceive to be the main reasons for the increase in handle.

The total sports betting handle for the month is $114 million. This is 166.7% higher than July’s $52.5 million. Out of the $140 million, almost $124 million comes from mobile or online sports betting. This means that online sports betting solutions facilitated majority of the wagers in the state.

Illinois Sports Betting

Illinois Sports betting handleLooking at revenue, we are seeing a gross revenue of $7.2 million for August. The state collected $1.2 million in taxes. Now, when looking at what people were betting on, we are seeing majority of the wagers on professional sports. Only $120,000 was spent in wagers on college sports. Meanwhile, motor sports accounts for around $130,000.

Majority of the wagers we are seeing are typical of what one would see in any major sports betting platform. The NBA, the NHL, and the MLB are the top sports that Illinois residents bet on. And since the NFL began in September, many are optimistic that the numbers for September may actually be higher.

Mobile Betting Policy

Currently, Illinois law requires people to register in a retail sportsbook prior to placing bets on online sportsbooks. However, since the pandemic is causing a stay home policy, Governor JB Pritzker is temporarily suspending the in-person requirement. This will allow people to easily conduct their wagering from the safety of their homes. While the first order expired on September 19, the Governor actually extended it to at least October 17.

If anything, September can prove how good the sports betting market can be if online wagering can be accessed easily. With the combination of the NFL, the NBA Playoffs, and online registration, September could increase substantially, and can continue well into the year.
